CBT TRAINING

 

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training), is a course that you are legally required to complete before being able to ride a motorcycle or scooter unsupervised on public roads.  This is also the first step to ultimately passing your practical test.

Once you have successfully passed your CBT and obtained a certificate from your Instructor, you then have 2 years in which to pass your practical test.  If you do not pass the practical test within the 2 years, your CBT certificate will become invalid and you will be required to re-take the CBT course.  All CBT courses are carried out at the Port Soderick official training site.

To carry out the CBT training or start lessons, you will first need to hold a valid Isle of Man driving licence.

 

MOTORCYCLE TRAINING LESSONS

 

On road lessons are carried out after you have completed your CBT course or if you already hold a CBT certificate.  Lessons are normally 1 hour, although 2 hour lessons are available if required.  We do supply a motorcycle for you to use, but you may use your own if required.  You will need to provide a valid insurance and CBT certificate to your instructor and also clearly display ‘L’ plates both to the front and rear of the motorcycle.  If you do wish to use your own motorcycle, it must be in road worthy condition.  All lights and indicators, horn must be in working order, tyres must meet the legal minimum requirement of 1.0mm (minimum recommendation of 1.6mm) A valid vehicle licence must be displayed on the motorcycle.  The motorcycle must be in good mechanical order.

Lessons can be carried out Monday through to Sunday and are subject to availability.

Lessons are structured to guide you through a set syllabus so that you reach the required standard to pass a practical test.  Some topics may be covered that were not necessarily covered on your CBT course.

You will be shown the most popular test routes and the areas used by the examiners to carry out manoeuvres.

Throughout your lessons and during your practical test, you will be in radio contact with your instructor or examiner at all times.  The radio is only one way therefore you are not able to speak back to your instructor or examiner.  If you have a problem you will be required to pull up in a safe place so that you can then speak to your instructor or examiner.

 

INTENSIVE COURSES

 

Rather than take lessons on a weekly basis, the option is available to carry out intensive training to ‘speed up’ your learning, so that you reach the required standard in a shorter time.  Please note that the CBT course and the motorcycle theory test must be completed and passed before a practical test can be booked.

The procedure for intensive training is as follows:

• Complete your CBT course and pass your motorcycle theory test (this can be completed in any order).
• Book your intensive motorcycle training course and when the dates have been confirmed by MSM, apply for the official practical test.
• When you receive your test date and time from the vehicle testing centre, let us know ASAP so that a motorcycle can be booked for you to use on the day of your test.  Please note – you may use your own motorcycle for the practical test, but you must provide to the examiner a valid insurance certificate, driving licence, and CBT certificate at the start of the test.
• Intensive training courses are generally carried out over a 2 day period.

CBT training - £130.00 – Includes motorcycle if required (a 50% deposit is required at time of booking)*

1 hour motorcycle lessons - £28.00 – Includes motorcycle if required.*

1 hour ‘try-a-bike’ lesson - £28.00 – This lesson is carried out at the Port Soderick training site.  After completing this 1 hour session you decide to proceed with your CBT course, the cost of the ‘try-a-bike’ lesson will be deducted from the cost of the CBT*.  CBT courses are subject to availability.
